Acoustic emission monitoring of the test was performed, starting with the second loading level. The acoustic emission data showed that this load exceeded the strength of the blade. An oil can type of deformation was seen in two areas of the upper skin of the blade from the beginning of the second loading. One was near the blade root and the other was at about 35% of the span. The acoustic emission data indicated that no damage was taking place near the root, but in the deforming area at 35% span, damage occurred from the first cycles of the second load. The test was stopped after approximately one day, although no gross damage had occurred. Several weeks later the test was resumed. Gross damage occurred in approximately one half hour. The emission data showed evidence of a possible second damage site.

A Full-Scale Fatigue Test of 9-m CX-100 Wind Turbine Blades

This paper presents the SHM result of a 9m CX-100 wind turbine blade under fullscale fatigue loads. The test was performed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The 9-meter blade was instrumented with piezoelectric transducers, accelerometers, acoustic emission sensors, and foil strain gauges on the surface of the blade. The blade underwent fatigue excitation at 1.8 Hz for defined interv...

Acoustic condition monitoring of wind turbines: tip faults

As a significant and growing source of the world’s energy, wind turbine reliability is becoming a major concern. At least two fault detection techniques for condition monitoring of wind turbine blades have been reported in early literature, i.e. acoustic emissions and optical strain sensors. These require off-site measurement. The work presented here offers an alternative non-contact fault dete...

A Pattern Recognition Approach to Acoustic Emission Data Originating from Fatigue of Wind Turbine Blades

The identification of particular types of damage in wind turbine blades using acoustic emission (AE) techniques is a significant emerging field. In this work, a 45.7-m turbine blade was subjected to flap-wise fatigue loading for 21 days, during which AE was measured by internally mounted piezoelectric sensors. This paper focuses on using unsupervised pattern recognition methods to characterize ...

Acoustic Based Condition Monitoring of Tur-

An initial investigation into the performance of acoustic condition monitoring in the detection of structural faults in turbine blades has been carried out. The focus is to design a non-contact condition monitoring method which might allow the detection of incipient faults in the turbine blades therefore preventing major breakdown and potentially reducing maintenance downtime. Such systems, may...

On the Use of Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation for Welded Joints Damage Characterization

A series of tests have been conducted to investigate fatigue damage characterization in corroded welded steel plates using structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. Acoustic Emission (AE) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique with potential applications for locating and monitoring fatigue cracks in service. In the present work, AE is implemented to characterize damage during crack e...
